The practical sailing courses provided are based on the syllabus laid down by the Royal Yachting Association. They comprise four different levels: Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coaster Skipper and Yachtmaster.

Competent Crew

This is the entry-level course and requires absolutely no previous sailing experience or nautical knowledge. Basic seamanship and helmsmanship are the main focus of this course, but chartwork, meteorology and many other matters nautical are bound to come your way! A personal RYA logbook is provided at the outset of this course and successful completion results in your first certificate to put in it!

Day Skipper

This course is aimed at those who have successfully completed the Competent Crew course, or those who have some sea miles and basic navigational skills. The course includes boat handling, pilotage and chartwork, as well as skippering the boat for a short passage. Successful completion of the course will earn you the Day Skipper certificate.

Coastal Skipper

This course is for the aspiring skipper who may be looking to charter or buy a boat, or those who wish to progress towards Yachtmaster or instructor. The emphasis is similar to Day Skipper, but leadership qualities and well-placed confidence are more to the fore. Offshore and coastal navigation, pilotage and meteorology are the main focus of the course, successful completion of which secures a certificate. However, the full qualification requires a practical examination by independent examiner. The course fee does not include the examiner's fee, but it does include the use of the boat! Yachtmaster

The Yachtmaster Offshore practical examination is by independent examiner. The prerequisite for this course is a minimum of 2,500 sea miles, 5 days as skipper and 5 passages of over 60 miles. The Yachtmaster course offered trains candidates for their Yachtmaster Offshore practical examination and will include at least one passage of 60 miles with you as skipper.
